  1. May I ask how you came to this ID? Yellow Cosmos is from Central America, not Asia. Posted 10 days ago
    1. I just ask uncle google n see the image is the same n i just said it. If you think is not correct then perhaps you can correct it. Indonesia was under Dutch occupation for about 350 years si it would be possible many plantations n flowers which not originally from Indonesia were brought in from anu other places including from Africa, Latin America n elsewhere. So I do not claim the above flower plant come from Indonesia but in fact can be found every where in Indonesia. Once again, I'm not a scientist so the title of image posted could be wrong n need someone to correct it. Thanks buddy. Posted 10 days ago
      1. Sugian, I'm not a scientist either :)

I just wanted to know how you came to the ID. Checking for a visual match is not enough, you also have to take into account the distribution/location. Location is the quickest way to determine if something is likely a match or not.

I hope you understand that I'm just trying to determine if your proposed ID is correct, and not just a guess. If you claim an ID without taking location into account, we have to assume that they may be incorrect. Which means you expect us to do this homework for you, for each and every post. We're all just volunteers here, therefore it would be great if in your Google searches, you also do a check for location. It took me 10 seconds to find out that this ID is not from Asia, so you can do the same?

Trust me, I know it's difficult. I don't have any biological background either. But all of us can at least do some basic checking, and location checking is part of this. I can guide you in useful resources where you can check this, if needed.

You are right though that flowers are difficult, they are often introduced or cultivated beyond their original location.

        1. Ferdy,
I just give the title of my picture not the ID. I am very happy if you or other people will provide the correct ID. So that is why I just give the Title n the place I took the picture. I skip "Identify Species" so anyone can put the correct ID.

          1. Sugian, I understand, but please note that by putting the suggested ID in the title, people may still up at your photo via search.

But that's not the main issue. My point is that I have asked you many times to include location in your search. I don't understand why you refuse to do this.

I'm not asking you to perfectly identify everything. I'm asking you to check location of the species you suggest. If it is well known that a species does not occur in Asia, it will clearly be wrong. You can and should do this check yourself.

But since you're not doing that check, you force moderators to do it for you for every single post. Moderators are volunteers who do this in their free time.

Do you understand my concern? Need any help to learn how to find the distribution of a species?
